The Department of Biomedical, Dental Sciences and Morpho-Functional Imaging was established in 2015 through the merger of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Land Safety, Food and Health, the Department of Neurosciences, the Department of Biomedical and Morpho-Functional Imaging Sciences, and part of the Department of Applied Medical-Surgical and Odontostomatological Sciences.
Theaching is organized into 13 degree programs and numerous postgraduate specialization schools, both in medical and non-medical fields. Several PhD programs are also available.
The Department's headquarters are located on the first floor of Building G ("Biological Tower") of the Gaetano Martino University Hospital Campus. The Department's operational offices are essentially located in the various buildings of the same Campus and at the Campus of the University of Annunziata.

The Department of Biomedical, Dental, and Morphological and Functional Imaging Sciences offers postgraduate training through numerous specialization schools, providing further qualifications to many young graduates, enabling them to join the workforce, both in clinical and surgical fields and in scientific research.
The Department's teaching activities are supervised by a Joint Committee, composed of an equal number of faculty and students. Its primary purpose is to monitor the educational offerings and teaching quality, as well as the faculty's student services, thus ensuring the improvement of the Department's educational service.
The Department's research activity is supported by 148 faculty members from 47 different scientific disciplines; that ensures interdisciplinary research lines and a broad coverage of the scientific fields, as demonstrated by the broad and diverse scientific production. Their work encompasses both the basic disciplines (Anatomy, Biology, Physiology, Histology, Medical and Biological Physics, Biochemistry, Chemistry) and the medical-surgical and diagnostic fields (Respiratory System, Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, Forensic Medicine, Neurology, Diagnostic Imaging), thus ensuring intense scientific activity within the Department itself. On this basis, a Scientific Commission has been established within the Department. Regular meetings, during which each Scientific-Disciplinary Sector presents the scientific progress made and allow the heterogeneous scientific community to work synergistically, to find a common ground that can advance scientific research.
